Personal Seal

In Japan, a personal seal（inkan or hanko） is used instead of a signature. There are two types of seal: a registered seal (jitsuin), which is registered at the City Office, and a personal seal (mitomein).

The jitsuin is used for formal contracts, such as buying a house, and legal procedures. A mitomein is used for simple legal contracts such as opening a bank account, withdrawing money from the bank and issuing receipts.

A personal seal can be made using kanji or katakana. However, a registered seal must be made with your name written in the same form as it appears on your official resident records ("juminhyo").

印鑑

日本では、サインの代わりに印鑑（はんこ）が使われます。市役所に登録している「実印」とそれ以外の「認め印」の2つがあります。

実印は、契約書の作成や法的手続のために使われます。認め印は、銀行口座の開設や預金の引き出し、領収書の発行など軽易なものに使われます。

認め印は漢字やかたかなで作ることができますが、実印を作るときは、住民票に書かれている名前と同じにするよう注意が必要です。
