When you wish to be examined by a doctor or to undergo medical treatment, you will need to go to a hospital which treats the symptoms of your illness. The medical departments, hours and holidays differ for each hospital so it is best to check details by telephone before you go. If you do not speak much Japanese, it would be best to go with a Japanese speaking friend for your first visit.

At big, general hospitals, you will be issued with a medical examination card specific for that hospital which is made at reception. After your name is called, proceed to the medical department appropriate for your illness. In Japan, most hospitals also have a dispensary, so you can receive the prescribed medicine following your examination. If you have a health insurance card, you should present it at reception on your first visit. If you are planning to use the same hospital again, be sure to have your medical examination card with you on all subsequent visits.

休日・夜間の緊急医療案内

　休日・夜間の緊急時に医療機関を受診したい場合，医療機関によって診療科目，診療時間，休診日がそれぞれ異なりますので，詳しいことは事前に電話でご確認ください。もし，日本語があまり話せない場合は，最初に受診する時に日本語が話せる友人等と一緒に行くことをお勧めします。

　受診する際，健康保険証がありましたら，受付で提示してください。受付後は職員の指示に従い，診察の順番をお待ちください。また，日本では，ほとんどの医療機関に薬局があるので，診察に続き，処方された薬を受け取ることができます。
　大きい総合病院等では，受付で診察カードを発行してくれる場合がありますので，再度同じ医療機関を受診する場合は，毎回診察カードを持参してください。
